Then we can get 50 pounds, it takes 50 pounds of the $ 8-T tea. The total value the tea is mixed 7T dollars plus 8 (50-T) dollars. The price per pound is the total cost of the total number of pounds. The Farrelly Brothers set this romantic comedy in their home state of Rhode Island. In 1985, when teen-nerd Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) challenges a high-schooler who’s bullying retarded Warren Jenson (W. Earl Brown), his concern prompts Warren’s sister, the dazzling and desirable Mary Jenson (Cameron Diaz) to choose Ted as her senior prom date, a fact Ted’s pals find hard to believe. However, on prom night, Ted gets his penis caught in his zipper, so the much-desired date never happens. Living in Providence and waxing nostalgic 13 years later, Ted hires Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to locate Mary, and the creepy private investigator finds her in Miami, where she lives with her tan-shriveled roommate Magda (Lin Shaye). After Pat develops a stalker-style fixation on the lovely, unattached Mary, he lies to Ted, telling him that she’s now an overweight mother confined to a wheelchair. Employing professional eavesdropping equipment, Pat gathers a dossier on Mary’s life and future plans, information that forms the basis for more lies when Pat begins dating her. Sure enough, Mary falls for Pat, although her friend Tucker (Lee Evans) is very suspicious of Pat’s claim to be a Harvard-educated architect. Meanwhile, Ted learns the truth but continues to encounter offbeat obstacles as he accelerates to Miami in hopes of finding happiness with his true love. Former Modern Lovers singer Jonathan Richman vocalizes a narrative ballad of onscreen commentary in the Cat Ballou (1965) tradition. Most of the cast sings and frolics to Build Me Up, Buttercup by The Foundations during the closing credits. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

The debut album by Peter, Paul & Mary is still one of the best albums to come out of the 1960s folk music revival, a beautifully harmonized collection of the best songs that the group knew, stirring in its sensibilities and its haunting melodies, crossing between folk, children’s songs, and even gospel (“If I Had My Way”), and light-hearted just where it needed to be, with the song “Lemon Tree,” which became their first hit single, and earnest where it had to be, particularly on “If I Had a Hammer.” Ironically, the trio’s version of the latter song, which Pete Seeger and Lee Hayes had written in the early days of the Weavers’ history, helped push popular folk music in a more political direction at the time, but it was another song in their repertory, Seeger’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” that also helped indirectly jump start that movement. The group had performed it in Boston at a concert attended by the Kingston Trio, who immediately returned to New York and cut their own version, which charted as a single early in 1962. Other highlights include “It’s Raining” and “500 Miles.” Peter, Paul & Mary, which hit the top spot on the album charts as part of a 185-week run, is the purest of the trio’s albums, laced with innocent good spirits and an optimism that remains infectious even 40 years later. Along with the rest of the trio’s early catalog, the album was remixed for CD from its original three-track master tape by Peter Yarrow in 1989, which resulted in some of the best sound on any Warner Bros. CDs of material dating from the early ’60s. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi Performers: Mary Travers – Vocals; Noel Paul Stookey – Vocals; Peter Yarrow – Vocals, Guitar

Do you ever have trouble finding good movies to rent? If you answered in the affirmative, I’m hardly surprised. That’s because the shelves of your local video store contain hundreds or thousands of films with appealing cover art and positive blurbs from some obscure Internet critic. Separating the wheat from the chaff isn’t always a simple proposition.
But that’s where this list comes in. Below, I proudly present an assortment of films for your viewing pleasure. From fantastical tales directed by Tim Burton to movies where Lee Marvin plays a wiry tough guy, each of these works combines solid performances with an above-average screenplay. In short, you simply can’t go wrong.
Big Fish (2003) – Albert Finney is Edward Bloom, a former traveling salesman (played as a younger man by Ewan McGregor) who’s approaching the end of his life. Visited by his son (Billy Crudup) in an attempt to repair their long-damaged relationship, Edward spins a series of tall tales about his life long ago. As with most Tim Burton movies, Big Fish is packed with fantastical imagery and bizarre characters. It’s also a surprisingly touching tale, with the theme of father/son relationships playing a key role. If you’ve ever wondered what defined a Southern Gothic movie, watch this one to find out. Also starring Jessica Lange, Marion Cotillard, Danny DeVito, Steve Buscemi, and Burton regular Helena Bonham Carter.
Children of Men (2006) – While this film didn’t blow up at the box office, it’s already regarded as a modern-day science fiction classic. Set in a dystopian Britain where people are no longer able to conceive, the film stars Clive Owen as Theo Faron, a former activist turned bureaucrat. When his estranged wife (Julianne Moore) shows up unexpectedly, she asks if Theo can help secure traveling papers for a young woman named Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey). He does so, and also agrees to accompany the young woman in exchange for money. But that’s when all hell breaks loose, and Theo learns that Kee is carrying a secret that could save the human race. Grim, gritty, and filled with action sequences captured in a single shot, Children of Men is a science fiction film that will both excite and make you think. Oh, and Michael Caine plays a pot-smoking hippie.
Prime Cut (1972) – A little-known gem from the early 1970s, Prime Cut stars Lee Marvin as a mob enforcer sent to Kansas City to collect $500,000 owed by Mary Ann (Gene Hackman), a violent and thoroughly wretched meatpacker/crime boss. Sissy Spacek makes her screen debut as a girl rescued from sexual slavery by Marvin. One of the film’s signature moments involves Marvin and Spacek being chased though a wheat field by a combine.
Vertigo (1958) – Considered one of the finest films from director Alfred Hitchcock, Vertigo stars James Stewart as a former cop who developed an intense fear of heights after witnessing a fellow officer fall to his death in the line of duty. When he’s hired by a friend to follow the man’s suspicious-acting wife (Kim Novak), our hero is drawn into a web of suicide, intrigue, and possible spiritual possession.
The Battle of Algiers (1966) – Filmed in a black-and-white documentary style with amateur actors, this landmark film about events during the Algerian War is still highly regarded by both cinema fans and members of the intelligence community. Both sides of the war receive equal treatment, and the DVD extras include everyone from Oliver Stone to Spike Lee discussing the political and cinematic importance of this motion picture.
The next time you’re looking for some good movies to rent, I hope you’ll consult this list for ideas. Each of these films is a classic in their own right, and they all have my personal stamp of approval.
