Striking while the iron is hot, Destiny’s Child presents its third full-length release in less than a year, following Survivor (May 2001) and 8 Days of Christmas (October 2001). An album of remixes is a profit-taking exercise by definition, but one needs only to gaze back a few weeks from this disc’s release to Jennifer Lopez’s J to the L-O! The Remixes, which went straight in at number one, to see that the profits can be considerable. And in this case, they deserve to be. Destiny’s Child ascended to superstar status in 1999-2000 behind a series of well-produced number one hits that gave them the opportunity to trumpet female self-assertion in a material world. In contrast to TLC, the more street-savvy girl group whose niche they usurped, they were a triumph of packaging over musical substance, an appropriate focus at a time when teen pop was ascendant. At first glance, This Is the Remix does not retreat from that stance; the singers appear on the cover applying makeup. And certainly the album is all about packaging — actually, repackaging. Typically, the word “remix” is far too modest to describe what such knob twiddlers as the Neptunes, Rockwilder, and Timbaland have undertaken. Retaining only the barest bones of the original recordings, if that, they have built wholly new musical tracks and brought in a bevy of guests, including Wyclef Jean, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, and Lil Bow Wow, and for the most part the results are all to the good. Fans may buy this album thinking of it as a de facto greatest-hits set, but if so they will be surprised to find that, for example, Rockwilder’s take on “Bootylicious” sounds almost nothing like the version they heard on the radio. And these versions aren’t only different; usually, they’re better than the originals. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Mathew Knowles – Sequencing; Kenny Anderson – Horn, Saxophone; Tim Grant – Fender Rhodes; William Garcia – Horn; Beyoncé – Vocals; Bow Wow – Vocals; Da Brat – Vocals; Daniel Weatherspoon – Keyboards; David Donaldson – Keyboards; Eric Walls – Gu

The remix is one of the oddest things in modern dance music. Often, it is the remix of a particular track that becomes the standout on the charts and dancefloors, while the original pales in comparison. Perhaps it is a postmodern way of balancing out the loss of collaboration caused by too many lone bedroom auteurs. Yet remix collections are usually to be avoided, since they can lack the cohesiveness that only an artist’s album can achieve. Berlin DJ/producer/label owner Ellen Allien breaks through this discrepancy with a collection of her own remixes, and they are so dominated by her particular touch that they easily become part of her own canon, sometimes leaving the originals in the dust. This is particularly true of Miss Kittin and Goldenboy’s “Rippin Kittin,” which has been tearing down clubs for several years. She even goes so far as to inject some of her own disembodied vocals into the remix of OMR’s “The Way We Have Chosen,” and in the case of Barbara Morgenstern’s “Aus Heiterem Himmel,” she transmits her pal’s vocals through the same bank of disconnecting effects. The same holds true for Covenant’s “Bullet.” At times, Allien’s dominance might leave you wondering why she didn’t just put the effort into her own recordings, most of which leave these mixes in the dust. But as one of the only ways most electronic producers interact, the remixes serve their function well, particularly for Ellen Allien fans who will most obviously grab this disc. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi

Unfortunately, when artists decide to commission remix discs of their catalogs, they often end up awash in a sea of predictable reconstructions and lackluster filler material that seem like nothing more than courtesy acts from other artists. In this instance, it is thankfully not the case whatsoever. After much consternation from only releasing a few of these tunes on vinyl, the ladies of Le Tigre made the excellent decision to supply these carefully crafted remixes together on one compact disc. Wasting no time in deconstructing and rewashing some of the most delicious moments of their catalog, Analog Tara’s acid-disco interpretation of “Tres Bien” seamlessly works its way into the Tigerbeat6-esque breakbeat-happy “On Guard,” remixed by Swim With the Dolphins. Contributions are also generous from N.Y.C.’s Reid Speed and New Yorker by way of Detroit Lauren Flax, who abandons her drum’n'bass roots for a very R&B-punk reworking of “Much Finer.” But unquestionably the highlight of this remix package is the bona fide juggernaut hurricane remix of “Deceptacon” by modern-day art punk heroes DFA. These six minutes are so infectiously funky and dancefloor-friendly that the ladies had an 11-minute extended-mix bonus track tacked on the end of the disc as the perfect reprise and appropriate finale to a wholly enjoyable remix disc. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi

Sometimes a return to basics can be the best way for an artist to move forward. For Salif Keita, that’s definitely the case with Moffou. In spite of using a hefty number of musicians (17, plus six backing vocalists), the sound is very stripped-down. Even the supple electric guitar work of Djeli Moussa Kouyaté is mellow and low-key. The real beauty here is Keita’s voice, carefully framed and used to maximum effect. High, almost piercing, it’s a gorgeous instrument that can ride and transform a melody, whether the lulling gentleness of “Yamore” or the more upbeat — but never frenzied — “Iniagige.” Overall, it’s a record of swaying, seductive gentleness, one perfectly suited to Keita’s style. After a few artistic missteps, he needs an album like this to reaffirm who he is and give a renewal to his sound. While it’s strongly rooted, it’s by no means strictly a Malian roots album; that’s never been all of his music by any means. While ineffably West African, there’s a lovely light sheen to the production that could only be European, and serves the sound well, smoothing it out but never losing the intimate flavor that’s at the album’s heart. Moffou reaffirms Keita’s star status, and his reputation as one of the world’s most glorious voices. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi Performers: Jean Louis Solans – Cavaquinho; Sayon Sissoko – N’Goni; Arnaud Devos – Zheng, Gong, Drums (Steel), Marimba, Harmonica, Percussion, Piano; Benoît Urbain – Accordion; Guy N’Sangue – Bass (Electric); Guy Sangue – Bass (Electric); Hadja Kouyate – Vocals (Background); Souleymanne Doumbia – Conga; Césari

What's the 411? Remix

What’s the 411? Remix

$5.07

Mary J. Blige’s debut album is an uneven affair, but amid some of the more pedestrian and formulaic R&B, it contains some sensational urban soul music. Songs such as “Real Love” and “Sweet Thing” heralded the arrival of a true and distinctive talent. As was de rigueur in early-’90s R&B, MCA/Uptown followed up Blige’s debut with an identically titled remix album. The idealistic view is that her record company chose to release such an album because it wanted to elevate the less successful moments on her debut to the heights reached by its hits. The cynical view is that the record company wanted to economically (as opposed to artistically) capitalize on the success of the hit singles. Whatever the motivation behind it, What’s the 411? Remix plays like a combination of both reasons. What this means is that it’s a uneven record, like the album which it attempts to illuminate and recontextualize, maintaining both highlights and low points. It takes the same general thematic form as its predecessor, opening with a series of phone messages that serve to punctuate how many famous friends and admirers Mary J. Blige has, before launching into the remixed versions of her songs. The production credits also punctuate the scope of her admirers. The main change the production work accomplishes is realigning Blige much more firmly with the hip-hop side of her hip-hop/soul blend. Sharp, repetitive beats and rumbling bass roll out and there’s the frequent presence of rap stalwarts such as Sean “Puffy” Combs, Craig Mack, Kid Capri, Greg Nice, and Biggie Smalls on various tracks, all of whom either rap or, in Puff Daddy’s case, leave fingerprints all over the production (given his fondness for recasting the songs by interspersing unmistakable vintage licks from classic rap songs from the past and present). Sometimes the bevy of different sounds works wonderfully, at least on a song-by-song basis (“Sweet Thang,” “Love No Limit,” and Puffy and Jesse West’s “Reminisce” remix, which sonically references Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y.” and includes a cameo from the latter), improving on the original in the process. On the whole, there is not much on this album that outshines What’s the 411?, and the step back into hip-hop doesn’t seem to suit Blige as much as it did the first time around. ~ Stanton Swihart, Rovi Performers: Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey – Vocals (Background); Darryl Pearson – Multi Instruments; DeVante Swing – Multi Instruments; Tabitha Brace – Vocals (Background); Terri Robinson – Vocals (Background);

This traditional thanksgiving meal is very rich in fiber and very easy to make. Hence it has found an apt place in the south as a traditional food at all times. Sweet potato pie recipes are no longer attempted once a year. They have found places on dining tables almost throughout the year, especially at holiday gatherings. It can be made as a quick snack at all times because of its fibrous quality.

The way in which you eat the various sweet potato pie recipes has to do with the taste and the amount of calories that you can add or shed by eating it. You can eat this pie plain or topped with whipped toppings or ice creams. A few cooks would make a meringue using egg whites and applying it on the pie a few minutes before removing it from the bake oven. In whichever way this is eaten, as a dessert after meals or in the case of veggies as a main course, sweet potato pie recipes offer the best health and nutrition for weight watchers.

Try out the best low calorie and low fat recipes from the internet and make a good thanksgiving dessert, or simply choose the best recipe to add to your festive mood in the ensuing Christmas season. Surprise your family with your cooking talents by making one of the best pie recipes that you are now going to learn to make using butter, spices and sweet potatoes.

For the ingredients you will require quarter cup softened butter, 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs yolks separated, 3/4 cup evaporated milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 1/2 cups cooked, peeled and mashed sweet potatoes, half tsp each nutmeg, cinnamon, quarter tsp ginger and 1 unbaked pie crust of about 9 inches.

Now for the method you will first have to pre-heat the oven to 3500 F. start with creaming the butter and sugar using an electric blender. Beat until the entire mixture has blended together, then add the egg yolks and continue beating. Put in the sweet potatoes, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, milk and ginger. Leave this mixture aside.

In another bowl beat the egg whites until white snowy peaks begin to form, slowly add the sugar and continue beating. Then gradually add the potato mixture to this blend while still beating. Pour this mixture into the pie crust and bake for a minimum of 40 minutes or until it is firm. This mouth watering dish can be served plain or with whipped cream.
