I am a big saver and make decent money for a 25 year old. I just feel like putting my money away in my roth IRA is a waste, I know I will be able to take it out tax free at 59, but I just think investing in stocks in my taxable account is better?? I can access the money if I ever need it, and in the future plan on buying real estate with my savings? All my friends say I am crazy, but why put it in a place it can’t be touched till almost 60? Your thoughts?
You are not crazy. In some cases it makes perfect sense NOT to invest in retirement funds.
You may know investments that will return more than the stock market over a long period of time even when you calculate the extra taxes you have to pay. Perhaps you have a business idea or want to buy real estate.
It is difficult to invest in real estate (other than REITs) using your retirement money. In that case if you need the money you may want to save it up until you can purchase your investment property.
Before you decide not to invest in your IRA please evaluate the situation. If you save in your IRA you are almost force yourself not to spend that money on something else. That means you will not spend on useless stuff. Believe me the temptation is strong. Very strong. A bigger house, a better car, a vacation, the list is countless.
You may thank yourself in 30 years you did save that money in your IRA.
