Any tips on what trades I can make or who to pick up to make my team better?

Your team is decent if you are in a 12 man league. If you are in a league with more people, then it is pretty good. If there are less than 12 people, then you need to make trades. I say you trade Torii hunter and Pat Burell for an outfielder.

Cynics have suggested that death is a shrewd career move for some artists, and when it comes to singer-songwriter Gram Parsons, whose life, work, and demise are chronicled in Fallen Angel, they may be right. Although undeniably talented, Parsons never had a hit and made just six albums, and only one of them (the Flying Burrito Brothers’ The Gilded Palace of Sin) is a bona fide classic. That’s one …

The Best of Kenny Burrell [Prestige]

The Best of Kenny Burrell [Prestige]

$12.97

Out of the many recordings Kenny Burrell issued for the Prestige label, it would be impossible to pick eight tracks and state they are his best. This collection makes a good go of it in selecting different sized groups Burrell participated in, and displays the variety of straight-ahead jazz contexts he worked in from 1956 to 1962. The classics include the ultimate 18-plus-minute blues-jazz jam “All Day Long” with fellow Detroiters Donald Byrd, Frank Foster, Tommy Flanagan, and Doug Watkins. From the top rank album The Cats comes “Minor Mishap” with Flanagan, John Coltrane, and Idrees Sulieman, as definitive a hard bop piece as there is. “Boo-Lu” is another memorable track, an angular Latin flavored composition reminiscent of Yusef Lateef, featuring Jerome Richardson on lead flute, and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley in later. The idea of stating a melody and having the second horn voice also crops up on the boogaloo shuffle “Montuno Blues,” where the cool Coleman Hawkins enters as an afterthought post-Major Holley’s scat sung and bowed bass, or Coltrane’s cameo solo on “I Never Knew.” The soul-jazz side of Burrell is here, playing rhythm chords with Jack McDuff’s organ during the simple groove biscuit “It’s a Wonderful World,” there’s the effortless swing and clean single lines the guitarist patented on “I’ll Close My Eyes,” and the as ultimate balladeer “All of You” displays Burrell’s individuality with his Detroit trio of Flanagan, Watkins, and a reserved drummer Elvin Jones, who all lay out as much as they play. Four of these tracks are from that great year in music, 1957, a time when the guitarist was a rising star. Fact is, his stature has never diminished since, and this compilation of a young Kenny Burrell is a good reminder of not only his talent and his roots, but a short and sweet example of how professional jazz should be played. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Paul Chambers – Double Bass; Ray Barretto – Conga; Art Taylor – Drums; Coleman Hawkins – Sax (Tenor); Donald Byrd – Trumpet; Doug Watkins – Double Bass, Bass; Eddie Locke – Drums; Elvin Jones – Drums; Frank Foster – Sax (Tenor); Hank Mobley – Sax

The Essential Albums: Lush Life/Soultrane/Stardust/Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane

The Essential Albums: Lush Life/Soultrane/Stardust/Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane

$30.57

This four-disc box set issued by Prestige collects John Coltrane’s sides for the label as a leader in 1957 and 1958, and his last date as a sideman for them. The material on Lush Life has its origins in two 1957 trio sessions and one quintet date from January of 1958. On the earlier sessions that make up three of the album’s five tracks, the saxophonist is in the company of bassist Earl May and drummer Art Taylor. On the nearly 14-minute reading of the title tune and “I Hear a Rhapsody,” Coltrane’s company includes pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, trumpeter Donald Byrd, and Taylor. The sessions for Soultrane were recorded on February 7; the personnel comprised Garland, Chambers, and Taylor — these latter three making up the pianist’s concurrently running trio. While the album as a whole is flawless, its standouts include Coltrane’s first recorded version of “I Want to Talk About You” and closer “Russian Lullaby,” which is an early taste of what would become his “sheets of sound” approach. Stardust was recorded at two sessions in July and December. On the first date the group comprises trumpeter/flugelhornist Wilbur Harden, Garland, Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb; on the December date, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and Taylor replace Harden and Cobb. Stand-out tracks here include the opening title ballad and the hard-swinging “Then I’ll Be Tired of You.” The final album here, also recorded in 1958, was released as Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane. The others members of this album’s quintet were pianist Tommy Flanagan, Chambers, and Cobb. The set contains a pair of Flanagan originals, one by Burrell, and two standards. While Coltrane feels somewhat constrained here — even on the upbeat “Freight Train” — his playing tends to move the groove right toward the session leader, who absolutely shines. Coltrane’s gorgeous tone is heard best on the Oscar Hammerstein II/Jerome Kern nugget “Why Was I Born?” All of this material has been made available numerous times before in various packages; this one is budget-priced. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Albert “Tootie” Heath – Drums; Arthur Taylor – Drums; Donald Byrd – Trumpet; Earl May – Bass; Freddie Hubbard – Trumpet; Jimmy Cobb – Drums; John Coltrane – Sax (Tenor); Kenny Burrell – Guitar; Lo

Paul Burrell’s life turned a dark corner in the early 2000s, when – amid a flurry of tabloid activity – the former butler to the English royal family endured criminal accusations of stealing the Windsors’ belongings. Though Queen Elizabeth ultimately stepped in with theretofore unseen evidence that proved Burrell innocent, the scars lingered for the onetime servant. The documentary Diana’s Rock: Paul Burrell observes Burrell both during the initial accusations and following the official exoneration. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Crohn?s disease, a disease belonging to the larger group of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), is named after an American gastroenterologist, Dr. Burrill B. Crohn. Crohn’s disease initially came to be known as a medical entity when it was referred to by Dr. Crohn, Dr. Leon Ginzburg, and Dr. Gordon D. Oppenheimer in 1932. The first description of this condition was earlier made by the Italian physician Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682?1771) in 1769, when he diagnosed a young man with a chronic, debilitating illness and diarrhea.

Successive cases were reported in 1898 by John Berg and by Polish surgeon Antoni Lesniowski in 1904. In 1913, Scottish physician T. Kennedy Dalziel, at the meeting of the British Medical Association, described nine cases in which the patients suffered from intestinal obstruction. On close examination of the inflamed bowel, the transmural inflammation that is characteristic of the disease was clearly evident. Abdominal cramps, fever, diarrhea and weight loss were observed in most patients, particularly young adults, in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1923, surgeons at the Mt Sinai Hospital in New York identified 12 patients with similar symptoms. Dr. Burrill B. Crohn, in 1930, pointed out similar findings in two patients whom he was treating.

On May 13, 1932, Dr. Crohn and his colleagues, Oppenheimer and Ginzburg, presented a paper on ?Terminal Ileitis?, describing the features of Crohn?s disease to the American Medical Association. This was published later that year as a landmark article in the Journal of the American Medical Association with the title “Regional Ileitis: A Pathologic and Chronic Entity.” The JAMA article was published at a time when the medical community was interested in new findings. The findings were given significant recognition, while the Dalziel article in the British Medical Journal of 1913 was not. It is by virtue of alphabetization rather than contribution that Crohn’s name appeared as the first author. This was the first time the condition was reported in a widely-read journal, and the disease came to be known as Crohn’s disease.
