David Baldacci, one of the New York Times bestselling authors, returns with a third exciting novel based on the adventures of the Camel Club. The Collectors and Simple Genius, start this series as the Camel Club is formed and led by Feisty Oliver Stone, aka former CIA assassin John Carr. In Stone Cold, this group of eccentrics is found living on the fringes of Washington, D.C. They have little power or influence, but they are dedicated to keeping an eye on the workings of our government.In this third adventure, Annabel Conroy, an honorary member of the club and talented con-artist, has incurred the wrath of a casino mogul who will stop at nothing until she is dead. Oliver Stone and the rest of the club dedicate themselves to protecting her at all costs–but soon, another, far more dangerous killer arises, and this one has set his sights on Oliver Stone himself. The pace increases to a frenetic whirlwind as the group desperately tries to keep their lives intact in the face of increasing menace on all sides; while one by one, men from Stone's shadowy past are turning up dead. Fans of Baldacci's fast-paced plotting and chilling characterizations will be delighted by this addition to his catalog of action-packed thrillers.
Although there are some albums that you can get a feel for instantly, there are others that one never truly gets a handle on. Such is the case with Floater and this recording. A song such as “An Apology” sounds as if it was pick-pocketed from a group like Incubus and Live, a guitar-driven tune that still has a flair for the theatrical at times. After a bit of meandering, it then heaves itself headlong into a lean, meaty, hard rock tune in the vein of Nickelback or Audioslave. This same tone is taken to greater heights with the raunchy “Proviso” that brings to mind a tamer Rage Against the Machine. From there, the group weave an ambient keyboard into a slow, plodding arrangement during “Ghost in the Making” that sways along effortlessly. Floater can’t be pigeonholed easily, especially when they change gears yet again for a mid-tempo, safe but somewhat stale “In America” that is salvaged only by lead singer’s Robert Wynia’s passionate delivery. Fortunately, they redeem themselves with the finely tuned and Police-like “Weightless” that they downplay for some fantastic results. The rhythm section of drummer Pete Cornett and Wynia shines here. Just as solid is the ensuing “Breakdown” that has some U2 hues to it despite the rather lame chorus section that is quite disappointing. Just as ordinary is “Spaces in Between Us” that doesn’t have much going for it. Things improve with “Everything Falls Our Way” which again touches on a radio-friendly hard rock blueprint for its success. The Camel Club members, along with its leader Oliver Stone, are respected and feared in Washington, D.C. This club’s purpose is to keep a watchful eye on what is going on and as a result they have gained both friends and enemies. There isn’t anything the leaders would do to prevent The Camel Club from discovering things they do not want made public.
Stone and the other members of The Camel Club are now trying to protect Annabelle Conroy. Annabelle did something unthinkable to casino big wheel Jerry Bagger, who murdered her mother. Jerry is now out for revenge.
Harry Finn then enters the picture. Harry is just like any other normal family man but he really lives two lives. He has many skills and helps to keep us safe. Finn was hired for a job to prove that there were several flaws in the security system and was able to slip into an airport and place a bomb on a plane without anyone getting suspicious. The Department of Homeland Security got authorization for this job and hired Finn to carry it through. Finn’s other job is that of an unstoppable killer and he is now out to get Oliver Stone. Men from Stone’s past are turning up dead.
Now the big questions are who will win and will they both survive?
It is not a must to read these two prior books by David Baldacci – The Camel Club and the Collectors – but I think it would help you follow along with the story. The author has created some very interesting characters for this novel and the reader will learn to like them even though they might be someone you should have doubts about. The character I liked the best is Harry Finn because he reminds you of James Bond all over again. It is a difficult feat to top the other two books in this series but David Baldacci has accomplished this and more. Stone Cold is the best in the Camel Club series yet. This book has it all – spies, suspense, action, twists and turns. Be sure to add “Stone Cold” to your reading list.
