For 20 years, a one-song single represented the entire recorded legacy of Sonic’s Rendezvous Band, fronted by former MC5 guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith and arguably the greatest American rock band to never make a studio album. But in the late ’90s two collections of live recordings appeared from a small label in Detroit, and the floodgates opened in 2006 with the release of Easy Action’s six-disc box set Sonic’s Rendezvous Band, a massive and revelatory collection of live shows, demos, rehearsal tapes, and studio sessions that finally allowed the full scope of the group’s music to be appreciated. Since then, a handful of single-disc releases have been drawn from the box set, and now Applebush Recordings has unearthed an unreleased SRB live show, committed to tape at the Second Chance in Ann Arbor, MI, on February 22, 1977. Anyone familiar with the box set knows that of the four live shows represented there, the two best came from 1978, and this 1977 concert finds the band just edging into genius; the band would be a bit tighter in 1978, but the guitar interplay between Smith and Scott Morgan was already fully on point, Smith and Morgan were both singing with soul and ferocity, and the rhythm section of Gary Rasmussen and Scott Asheton drives this music like a classic muscle car with a full tank of high-test. Unfortunately, while most of the live material on the Sonic’s Rendezvous Band box set was mastered from good- to excellent-quality soundboard tapes, The Second Chance appears to be an audience recording, and while it’s well short of bad, it lacks the clarity this music deserves, though it’s plenty loud and has punch to spare. And these aren’t the definitive recordings of “City Slang,” “Earthy,” “Song L,” or “Soul Mover,” though the songs here are great and the band rises to the occasion on every tune. The Second Chance offers more concrete evidence that Sonic’s Rendezvous Band were a group to be reckoned with, and you don’t have to be a Detroit rock obsessive to love this, but if you’re looking for a introduction to SRB at their finest, the Masonic Temple: Detroit 1978 album is a better place to start. It would be possible for a blues guitar fan, picking up this album after recognizing the name Peter Malick as the veteran of the James Montgomery Band among other blues affiliations, to suppose, upon popping it into the CD player, that the wrong album was pressed on the disc. That is because the first few tracks, and several subsequent ones, sound much more like folk-rock singer/songwriter performances by female singers reminiscent of Ani DiFranco and Shawn Colvin than the work of a blues veteran. But this really is a Peter Malick record. Over the previous few years as he went from club to club around the country, Malick recruited up-and-coming women singers for recording sessions. He might still be storing those tracks in his personal archive, except that one of them was Norah Jones, who went on to multi-platinum, multi-Grammy success. His six songs with Jones were released three months earlier on the New York City EP, and they are repeated here, along with two tracks each featuring Jess Klein, Kirsten Proffit, Antje Duvekot, and Malick’s daughter Mercy Malick. The non-Jones tracks are mostly in folk-rock mode, the women earnestly sharing their personal and emotional observations in throaty voices. The Jones tracks are quite different, none of them co-written by the singer. Instead, she simply fronts Malick’s blues-rock band, giving him the chance to show off his chops. Fans of her album Come Away With Me may be taken aback at first, but likely will accept a bluesier Jones, especially when they get to hear Malick’s playing on such tracks as “Deceptively Yours” and Magic Sam’s “All Your Love.” Here, the bluesman takes less of a back seat. Some conspiracy theorists believe that over 80% percent of the People Who work at the CIA are homosexuals, whereas others say it is only about 20 percent. But no matter what if you know someone who works at the CIA or is ex-CIA then they are probably gay.
When you meet someone who says they work at the CIA or has formerly worked at the CIA you must assume that they are automatically homosexuals and gay. I am not the only one who believes this, you would be surprised to how many people around Washington D.C. believe the same thing.
If you are homosexual there is a good chance you can get hired by the CIA and travel to foreign lands on taxpayers money and even get good benefits when you retire. Plus you will be able to screw many foreigners in more ways that one. It is great that homosexuals have a place in our government? This proves we are a non-biggot nation and that our government is equal opportunity employer for homosexuals. Consider this in 2006 especially if you are gay.
