HyperDiy Media, a new kind of ‘Record Label Replacement Company’, are offering a range of services to replace the old-fashioned style record deal.
Aimed at artists, bands and small labels. HyperDIY can handle anything from simple online distribution to a full campaign including Videos and radio plugging and a number of ever expending territories around the world. The aim is to allow new bands to have a chance at getting their music heard by the public at large, without having to wait to be discovered by the increasingly tight and inward looking circles of the music Industry.
“A lot of bands and artists feel that it’s hard to get any interest from record labels due to the state most labels are in, they all seem to be playing it very safe.” said Richard, the companies Managing Director. Dawn Firth, the CEO added “A lot of people think it’s impossible to have a successful music career without a label, but there’s a lot of talented bands and artist’s out there who just haven’t been lucky enough to get the breaks”.
HyperDIY’s aim is to provide the tools to level the playing field. For a range of low one off fees, artists can have HyperDIY handle everything that a traditional label would handle for the band. Artists are able to select several individual services such as distribution, mastering, PR, Video Production and online support or to select from a number of packages which combine a number of the above for reduced rates. The best part is that any revenue the band makes from their record sales goes back to the band, with HyperDIY not taking one single percent from their profit. Also, HyperDIY does not have an A&R policy. “We aren’t here to judge,” added Dawn “We always believed that it is for the public to decide- so often the labels get it wrong!”
Many of the packages can be paid for over time and even if, in these recessional times, an artists finds he can’t quite afford the services, Dawn and Richard urge artists to get in touch. “We aren’t some faceless major, contact us for a chat and we’ll see how we can help” says Dawn.
HyperMEDIA also provide a FREE press release service to anyone who signs up to their mailing list, just go to their site, click where advertised and fill in your details, then they will get your press release out far and wide.
So if you are asking yourself, “Who needs a record label?” go to http://www.hyperdiymedia.com and see what they have to offer.

With its heavy-duty distortion, weighty rhythms, and cynical lyrics, Tool is a heavy metal band for the ’90s. Rather like Metallica circa …And Justice for All, the sound is focused heavily on texture, with vocals and guitars layered one atop the other, and heart-pounding drums underlying everything. There’s not a whole lot of variety on Tool’s second full-length album–most of the songs start of…
With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn’t be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks–the sitar and tabla enhanced “10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)” and its suitably epic psych-rock sister “Rosetta Stoned”–even linger on for nearly a d…
Everything about Tool’s fourth album is an experience, starting with the packaging, which consists of liner credits printed on a translucent plastic sleeve over the CD and a booklet that layers anatomical representations atop one another–the first page pictures musculature and blood vessels; the next, bones; the third, internal organs; and so on. It’s worth describing the packaging of Lateralus b…

The Dutch progressive rock outfit Cliffhanger released its fourth studio album, Circle, in March 2001, on its eighth birthday. This opus follows more commercial prog rock guidelines, but one should not forget that the band already had strong tendencies to resort to catchy melodies. Rinie Huigen’s voice can recall Citizen Cain’s singer (the opening line on “Port [Voyage of the Soul]” comes this close to plagiarism), but that is as far the Genesis influence will go. Gijs Koopman’s Chris Squire-esque bass work is prominently featured on most of the tracks. On instrumental pieces like “The Birthday Party” and “Chateau Jam,” the King Crimson influence rises to the surface, while on catchier tunes like “One-Track Mind,” “Moving in Circles,” or “Autumn,” the band sounds somewhere between Marillion, 1980s Yes, and Norwegian prog rock group Fruitcake. Therefore, a general description of the album would have to lean toward neo-prog and emphasize on the song format. The melodies must be left a chance to grow on the listener for Circle to become truly enjoyable. Even then, it doesn’t rise above the mass of prog rock records released each year, but some songs are definitely well-crafted following the standard rules of the genre. Nothing transcendental, but a strong, honest release nonetheless. ~ François Couture, Rovi
When he walked into Keystone Recording in Indianapolis on August 18, 1981, Zero Boys singer Paul Mahern told producer/engineer John Helms he wanted his band’s debut LP to “sound like the Germs’ GI,” released two years prior. “He really nailed it!” laughed Mahern recently. Much agreed: Few records have ever sounded this whizbang buzzing. And whereas GI transformed an appallingly shambolic L.A. band into a shocking powerhouse, Vicious Circle merely snared a smokin’ Indiana band that’d been rehearsing five hours a day — so tight they spun this corker out in just two days, by recording live together. It still bursts out of your speaker on CD as it did off a needle when released on Nimrod records 19 years ago. Terry Hollywood’s razor-zinging guitar and Tufty Clough’s Speedy Gonzalez’ bing-bing-bing bass playing (fastest fingers in the Midwest) burn like blowtorches, and drummer Mark Cutsinger plays like he IV’ed amphetamines. Mahern sings like a hurrying rabbit, rapid-firing words about assassinations/celebrity-shootings, anti-nostalgia, having a “high time,” and, well, doing speed. Whereas other records of the new hardcore scene tried to sound tough, this was like Johnny Thunders, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Dictators, and S.L.F. on 45, smiling like dopes. Reissued with two bonus tracks from the same session, Vicious Circle remains a vicious pleasure of frenzied attitude, chops, speed, tight playing, and rocket-launching zeal. ~ Jack Rabid, Rovi Performers: Mark Cutsinger – Drums; Paul Mahern – Vocals
Full Circle was Dan Fogelberg’s first regular album release in ten years, not counting the 1995 duo album with Tim Weisberg, No Resemblance Whatsoever, and the 1999 seasonal collection First Christmas Morning. Issued on Fogelberg’s own Morning Sky imprint through Jimmy Buffett’s Mailboat Records, it was a typical collection for the veteran singer/songwriter, who wrote most of the songs, played most of the instruments, and engineered and produced the disc himself. It is lacking in the string sweetening that characterized many of his most popular recordings, but otherwise recalls them in its clutch of melodic, romantic pop/rock tunes. Mostly, Fogelberg is either celebrating love or lamenting the absence of a loved one. Occasionally, he touches on grittier or more esoteric concerns, however. “Reason to Run” expresses some regrets, notably with regard to substance abuse. “Seems I’ve always had these friends of mine/The smoke, the bottle, and the fine white line/To keep me company through the crush of time,” he sings. And then there is “Icarus Ascending,” in which he tries to reposition the Icarus legend, or at least stop short of its conclusion, in which Icarus flies too close to the sun and then, his wings melted, plunges to his death; the dark implication remains, however. Such are the hints Fogelberg provides about his life when he’s not indulging in clichés to express his feelings of love (“When you’re not near me/I make the sound of one hand clapping/When you’re not near me/I leave no footprints in the sand”). Actually, the most revealing song may be the title tune, which he did not write. “Full Circle” is a Gene Clark composition first heard on the 1973 album Byrds, a one-off reunion of the original Byrds lineup. Then, it seemed to comment on that group, a big influence on Fogelberg. In his hands, it comes off as a renewed statement of purpose. But even with a decade to do so, the singer/songwriter still hadn’t managed to come up with an entire album’s worth of first-rate material, and it’s telling that the best-written song was a cover. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Kenny Passarelli – Vocals (Background); Dan Fogelberg – Mandolin, Vocals (Background), Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar, Keyboards, Guitar (Electric), Piano, Guitar (Acoustic), Percussion, Vocals, Bass; Sven Birkebeiner – Keyboards
The Best of Impact Records is a 25-track collection that features a selection of rare singles released by the Detroit-based indie label. The collection is approriately balanced between garage-rock and soul singles, with the most familiar group being the Detroit Wheels. Other artists on the collection are the Human Beings, Mickey Denton, the Boss Five, the Shades of Blue, the Classmen, the Sheppards, the Inner Circle, Sincerely Yours, the Lollipops, the Sixpense and Rod Riguez. Some of these songs are absolute dynamite, while others are recommended only because of thier sheer rarity, but the disc should be of interest to hardcore ’60s rock collectors. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Spring cleaning is over, and you’re staring at seven crates of rare vinyl records that your parents had stuffed in a corner of your basement for the last 15 years. Forgotten memories? Or potential goldmine? The value of records is increasing, much like the sales, and record dealers and enthusiasts alike are looking to grade and price their collections for reselling on the market, eBay being the largest marketplace at this moment in time.
If you own collectible or rare vinyl records, it would be in your best interest to have those records appraised to determine their worth. The most common way of discovering the value would be to seek the services of a professional records appraiser, who will analyze the condition, rarity, and playability of the record. As well, they will take a look at other aspects such as:
The release date – The older the record, the more it could be worth.
Whether the record is sealed or not – If it hasn’t been played, the value will increase.
Limited release records also hold increased value – e.g. only 1000 copies pressed.
If you happen to have several crates of old LP’s and 45′s that you are interested in getting appraised, it could wind up to be fairly expensive especially if you have limited knowledge of how records are graded. My suggestion would be to purchase a vinyl records price guide which lists the current market price and requirements for buying and selling rare vinyl LP’s. I have used Tim Neely’s Goldmine Record Album Price Guide for quite a few years, and it is by far the most comprehensive and easy to navigate price guide on the market today.
Cover Art is also a factor to consider when looking to buy or sell rare vinyl records. During the 60′s and 70′s many celebrity artists collaborated with musicians and bands they respected in the form of cover art and inner sleeves, Andy Warhol being one of the more popular. Don’t forget that any artwork with nudity seems to be popular amongst buyers just the same! Remember, vinyl outsold CD’s in 2007 for the first time in many, many years and this is a great time to get into collecting records and begin experiencing the warmth and quality that they bring. If you download an mp3 you’re given a thin-sounding, compressed audio file with a digital image thumbnail of the album cover and artwork. With vinyl records you get an experience that is truly one of a kind, and there is no feeling quite like it!
