In 1994, the Document label reissued 26 old-time Paramount blues recordings that originally appeared during the years 1926-1929. The word “rare” in the title of this compilation is doubly appropriate, as the artists represented here exist in the dusty margins of blues history where they have been eclipsed by more familiar names like Ma Rainey, Little Brother Montgomery, Roosevelt Sykes, Papa Charlie Jackson, Charley Patton, and Charlie Spand. With a couple of exceptions, most of the people heard on this disc are represented (along with the famous names just mentioned) on JSP’s affordably priced four-CD set The Paramount Masters, and obtaining all five discs might ultimately be a really wise move. Document’s edition features what must be the largest number of recordings by kazoo handler Charlie “Dad” Nelson ever assembled on one collection, in addition to uncommon examples by Freddy Brown, Ruby Paul, Lonnie Clark, Smoky Harrison, someone who went by the name of Jack O’Diamonds, the Too Bad Boys, the Paramount All-Stars (who perform authentic early skiffle music), and Sweet Papa Stovepipe, a singer from New York City who probably got the nickname by wearing a top hat and whose “All Birds Look Like Chicken to Me” taps into the minstrel tradition of the 1890s. This individual’s given name was McKinley Peebles, and for obvious reasons, people mix him up with Daddy Stovepipe, also known as Johnny Watson, and Stovepipe No.1, whose less illustrious name was Sam Jones. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi Performers: Papa Charlie Jackson – Banjo, Vocals; Alex Hill – Piano, Vocals; Bob Grant – Guitar; Charlie Spand – Speech/Speaker/Speaking Part, Piano; Paul Robinson – Vocals; William Ezell – Speech/Speaker/Speaking Part, Piano
This 1998 Bear Family reissue of a CD originally issued in 1990 on Colin Escott’s Zu-Zazz imprint gathers together the absolute cream of Charlie Feathers’ unreleased and alternate recordings. Usually an album of outtakes would infer a compilation of less than releasable material. But Charlie Feathers’ unreleased demos and outtakes are every bit as illuminating and wonderful as his better-known singles, making this just as good as any Feathers collection out there, save for the two-disc Revenant anthology, which contains all of his ’50s recordings intact. Here are 1954 living room rehearsals for his first Sun session (“Defrost Your Heart,” “Runnin’ Around,” “I’ve Been Deceived”), outtakes from his second (“Wedding Gown of White,” “Defrost Your Heart”), the 1956 Sun demo session (“Corrine, Corrina,” “Frankie & Johnny,” “So Ashamed,” “Honky Tonk Kind,” and an early stab at “Bottle to the Baby” with different lyrics), rowdier and looser King outtakes (“Bottle to the Baby,” “One Hand Loose,” “Everybody’s Lovin’ My Baby,” and “I Can’t Hardly Stand It”), and rare singles for local labels like Wal-May, Memphis, and Kay (“Dinky John,” “Today and Tomorrow,” and “Wild, Wild Party”), rounded out by some great ’60s and early-’70s sides cut at the Sun and Select-O-Hits studios (a recut of “Tongue Tied Jill,” “Gone! Gone! Gone!,” “Where’s She at Tonight,” and “Wild Side of Life”). Some — but not all — of this also appears on Revenant’s The Essential Recordings two-disc set. This particular edition, however, sports superior sound and mastering. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi
