Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can’t follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. With an introduction that includes giving thanks for a pair of comfortable shoes, as only someone who spent the first 15 years of his life mostly barefoot could, the autobiography of the late Johnny Cash is, like his music, simple and eloquent. Discovering country music via Roy Acuff and the Louvin Brothers, among others, he became part of the immortal Sun Records stable of musicians that also included Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins; he recounts his initial meeting with legendary Sun Studios owner and producer Sam Phillips, his shaky attempts at recording his debut single (it took over 30 takes), his thrill at performing his first hit Cry, Cry, Cry on the LOUISIANA HAYRIDE radio show, and his first Cadillac. He's also candid about his amphetamine and alcohol addiction, admitting the constant conflict between his darker impulses and his long-standing religious convictions. Throughout, Cash leaves detached analysis and precise recounting of minute detail to music scholars; but what is lost here in objectivity is gained in a series of remarkable vignettes steeped in country music history, all told through the filter of co-author Patrick Carr's superb prose recreation of the singer's trademark laconic, baritone drawl.

Johnny Cash is Johnny Cash, and in a way, that’s all one needs to say in reviewing one of his collections, and there are hundreds of them out there. This three-disc set covers 1956 to 1984, and includes most of Cash’s key commercial tracks from those three decades, starting with the early Sun recordings of the classics “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues” and continuing through the equally classic and undeniably lovely “I Still Miss Someone,” the ominous “Five Feet High and Rising,” the oddball, tongue-twisting, and completely delightful “One Piece at a Time,” and the later-era Cash versions of Bob Dylan’s “Wanted Man” (from 1970) and Bruce Springsteen’s “Highway Patrolman” (from 1983). The end result is a nice, concise look at this American legend. Again, Johnny Cash is Johnny Cash, and that’s what you get here, and that’s a good thing. Hey, it’s Johnny Cash. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

The Fabulous Johnny Cash

The Fabulous Johnny Cash

$5.58

The Fabulous Johnny Cash was Cash’s first album for Columbia Records and one of his best for the label. Unlike some of his latter-day albums, there wasn’t much filler on the record. At the time of its recording, Cash had just been freed from his contract with Sun. Instead of recording these songs for his last Sun sessions, he wound up saving much of his best material for his Columbia album, and that’s what makes The Fabulous so consistent. The album builds on his basic, spare sound, but it is slightly more polished than his Sun records. But what makes it so entertaining are the songs themselves. From “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town” and “Frankie’s Man, Johnny” to “Pickin’ Time” and “The Troubador,” the album is filled with first-rate songs, with only a handful of mediocre songs like “Suppertime,” which don’t distract from the overall quality of the album at all. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Al Casey – Guitar; Johnny Cash – Vocals

Hymns by Johnny Cash

Hymns by Johnny Cash

$5.58

Although Sam Phillips steered Cash away from gospel and sacred music in the mid-’50s at Sun Records, in fact much of what Cash recorded in his early career still had a devout tone, often with piety and imagery that wouldn’t have sounded foreign in a gospel context. So although this 1959 album was entirely devoted to religious songs, it didn’t really sound that different from his prior work, and remains accessible to Cash fans whether or not they’re religious or have an interest in sacred song. The arrangements remain as sparse as most from his 1950s catalog, though stately backup vocals are often present. Too, these aren’t strictly traditional numbers, as Cash writes or co-writes about half the tunes. Sure, “Are All the Children In” skirts bathos with its spoken sections, yet songs like “The Old Account” and “It Was Jesus” have the country-rockabilly bounce characteristic of much of his secular material. In fact, despite its specialized focus, it’s somewhat generic 1950s Cash at a casual listen, though even generic 1950s Cash is good. The CD reissue adds just one bonus track, and a peripheral one at that: a “mono EP version” of “It Was Jesus,” which is lacking the backup vocals found on the LP one. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Al Casey – Guitar; Johnny Cash – Vocals

Johnny Cash Remixed

Johnny Cash Remixed

$16.99

Johnny Cash earned his legendary status with his music and his life. In a career that stretches from the dawn of commercial country and pop music to the dawn of the 21st century, he made his rep as an artist of uncommon integrity. Too bad the same can’t be said for his record labels. Even before he passed, his music was subjected to a massive repackaging and reissue program, and Johnny Cash Remixed continues the trend, with the expected unfortunate results. Who knows what Cash thought about hip-hop, but it’s hard to believe he would have enjoyed this bastardization of his work. The collection was produced by John Carter Cash and Snoop Dogg, and while it has its amusing moments, the original Sun Recordings Cash made in the 50s will still sound timeless long after the junk on this album has faded from memory. “I Walk the Line” gets smothered by Snoop Dogg’s big, bass heavy production; “Get Rhythm” is transformed into an electro-funk track with the original track broken into snippets and sprinkled onto the pounding backbeats; “Doin’ My Time” sounds like a soul band cover with Cash making a brief “appearance” near the end of the track; Alabama 3, the guys who recorded the song that became the theme for The Sopranos use a snippet of “Leave That Junk Alone” but reinvent the track as their own. Machine Drum’s “Belshazzar” remix leeches all the drama out of the song, and Apparat’s take on “I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow” also tries to make a desolate song more desolate by adding industrial sound effects, but the effort is wasted. On the positive tip, as the kids would say, there’s Count de Money’s remix of “Big River,” which adds a few dub effects and an electric guitar solo that isn’t bad, but is unnecessary. Sonny J’s “Country Boy” breaks up Cash’s solo and makes it sound like a rap, complemented by gospel-esque female vocals, while on “Folsom Prison Blues,” Pete Rock adds slide guitar (probably from Carter Cash) and a thumping club beat, but the song remains fairly intact. Troublemaker gives “Straight A’s in Love” a digital mashup that’s not too bad, and Wolf drops some thumping electroclash beats into “Rock Island Line” to add a bit of frenetic energy to the track, but again, why bother? Maybe this album will introduce Cash to a generation of listeners who might not otherwise discover him, but his original music is powerful enough to win them over. He doesn’t need studio tricks to make his music sound timeless. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ j. poet, Rovi

Cash: Ultimate Gospel

Cash: Ultimate Gospel

$7.97

Johnny Cash released more than half a dozen gospel albums during his career, beginning with 1959′s Hymns by Johnny Cash, and he scattered gospel tunes throughout his other works as well. A deeply religious man, he sang his songs of praise with as much, or perhaps more, conviction as he did his secular material — even the most skeptical non-believer would have to appreciate the honesty and soul of Cash’s gospel recordings. Cash: Ultimate Gospel collects 24 of his best, most drawn from his Columbia catalog with a pair (“I Was There When It Happened” and “Belshazzar”) emanating from Cash’s early Sun Records period, and two (“Oh Come, Angel Band” and “Children Go Where I Send Thee”) originally on the Cachet label. Three tracks on the set are previously unreleased: a moving reading of “How Great Thou Art,” that rivals Elvis Presley’s, “It Is No Secret What God Can Do,” and “My Ship Will Sail.” As with all of Cash’s music, there is a realism and warmth to his delivery; Cash’s spiritual music is saccharine-free and naked in its emotions, non-preachy and devoid of hellfire in its words — he’s out to tell a story, not to convert. Cash: Ultimate Gospel is sequenced in a non-chronological manner, which works to its benefit — the songs flow together beautifully, so that the transition from a polished ’70s track such as “The Preacher Said ‘Jesus Said’” to the more minimalist “I Was There When It Happened” (from 1957) isn’t jarring in the least. Some of the songs here are traditional and well-known to all (“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Amazing Grace”), while others have a distinctive Cash stamp on them (“Daddy Sang Bass,” the Cash-June Carter Cash duet on the Carter Family’s “Far Side Banks of Jordan”). All told, it’s as rich and rewarding a collection of Johnny Cash music as any other. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi Performers: Mother Maybelle Carter – Autoharp; 21st Century Singers, Nashville – Vocals (Background); Anna Grizzard – Vocals (Background); B.J. Baker – Vocals (Background); Frederic Schulman – Vocals (Background); Jan Howard – Vocals (Background); Johnny Whittaker – Vocals (Background); Millicent Alexander – Vocals (Background);

Like the critically acclaimed movie, our story also begins in Folsom Prison. But unlike the movie, there is not a word of truth in our story. Inspired by an idea from Bear Family’s Richard Weize, music-historian Hank Davis has created a fictionalized Traveler, and told the imaginary story of his life based on 20 of Johnny Cash’s best Sun recordings. Join our Traveler as he sits alone in his cell with the Folsom Prison Blues, remembering how he drove his true love Katy down a Wide Open Road, forcing her into the arms of a Mean Eyed Cat, and dooming himself to forever ride the Blue Train. You’ll also learn who that ‘Man’ in Reno was, and why the Traveler shot him “just to watch him die.” With tongue firmly in cheek, we present this concept album that was never released during Johnny Cash’s lifetime, but would have been a worthy companion piece to his efforts like ‘Ride This Train.’ Includes 20 original Sun recordings, including an undubbed version of “Guess Things Happen That Way”.

If you want to learn how to win at casino slot machines, then read this. You will learn tips on how to win jackpot slot machine games.

Playing slots is really an exciting game. The adrenaline hormones surge high as the symbols of jackpot line up. The odds, as they say, are really always against the player but there are tips on how to possibly win.

The first step is to understand the work of the slot machine. So, how do slots really work? Why is it that the symbols vary from time to time? Well, this is the work of the random number generator or RNG. This is an electronic regulator which has the capacity to change the resulting line up or combination of symbols for a thousand times every second. Thus, there is no human intervention with regards to the outcome of the game.

The second step is to carefully check the pay table. The pay table contains the list of potential combinations plus the number of points or coins each player will pay. Generally, if you play with fewer coins, then you will get nothing. Learn how to determine if how many coins is needed and played to be able to win the jackpot.

There are strategies to be able to win at slots. You have to learn these strategies. One strategy is to ‘hit and run.’ You will surely maximize your potential to win. ‘Hit and run’ means quitting after you have won. Do not use the money you have won to play again, and do not play with the same machine that made you win. There is no such thing as ‘hot’ slot machine. As we mentioned, the RNG changes the combination for several thousand times in every second. There is no guarantee that it will give you a winning combination again.

Self control is another strategy. Set a budget for your play and stick to your allotted budget. Once the limit is reached, stop playing. This is better rather than spending all your money and winning nothing. If not, set a time. Once you reached the time, go out of the casino. At least, you still have money to play later.

Another strategy is to check all machines and payouts that they offer. Choose the one that gives the best or highest payout for every coin spent. The fewer coins for a bigger jackpot is better. Speaking of jackpot, there are bonuses. Again, compare and select the one that requires use of fewer coins but gives higher bonus.

A tip for you, look for a casino that has slots club. With this, you are given a card which you will insert into the machines that you are playing with. This keeps track of all your plays and you are given corresponding points which you may exchange for complimentary items. Comps include free meals, free merchandise, or free room. Even if you will lose, you still accrue points. Thus, do not forget your card every time you visit the casino so that you will have something as a price for sure.

Follow these simple guidelines and you will surely have a winning streak.
