Woody Herman was dedicated to keeping his big band going and was focused more on music that satisfied him than focusing on making hits. Most of the selections in this three-CD set came from an overlooked period in the clarinetist’s career, his early 1960s tenure on the Phillips label. At this point, Herman had recently welcomed new arrivals like trumpeter Bill Chase, tenor saxophonist Sal Nistico, and trombonist Phil Wilson, while still talented veterans like pianist Nat Pierce, tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins, and drummer Jake Hanna. Culled from six separate albums plus a 45 pm single, the Herman band may not reach the heights of earlier groups for some fans, but they are clearly a force to be reckoned with. Among the highlights are Pierce’s sauntering arrangement of Joe Newman’s “Mo-Lasses,” the playful “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” that also interpolates Duke Ellington’s “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart,” Chase’s lush interpretation of the pop song “A Taste of Honey,” a frisky take of Charles Mingus’ “Better Get It in Your Soul,” return visits to old favorites like “Bijou” and “Apple Honey,” plus “You Dirty Dog,” a recent composition by Ellington for his small group record date with Coleman Hawkins. This is an excellent survey of music that deserves to be remembered. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Bill Chase – Trumpet; Bill Perkins – Sax (Tenor); Billy Hunt – Trumpet; Bob Rudolph – Trombone; Bob Stroup – Trombone; Bobby Lee Jones – Sax (Tenor); Carmen Leggio – Sax (Tenor); Chuck Andrus – Bass; Daniel Nolan – Trumpet; Danny Nolan – Trumpet;

While most Mosaic limited-edition boxed sets concentrate on recordings by an individual bandleader or a single record label, Boogie Woogie and Blues Piano features sessions by a number of different artists from several labels active in the 1930s and early
The 12th volume in the Mosaic Select series offers a different view of its chosen artists than on previous issues. For starters, all of the recordings on these three CDs are previously unissued live performances. They are compiled from the years between 1976 and 1991, when Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach began recording together in an electric group called Lookout Farm (with Frank Tusa, Jeff Williams, and Todd Barkan), and recorded for the ECM label. They continued as a duo for the same label, and then for the A&M Horizon label and Artists House. Finally, they collaborated again in a group called Quest, with bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart. The music ranges from fusion (Liebman had been Miles Davis’ saxophonist for his On the Corner and Get Up With It albums) to modal exploration รก la Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. Given that these are live recordings, everything here is stretched out, sometimes to the breaking point, but that makes it no less compelling a listening experience. While jazz purists may find the Lookout Farm material to be the hardest to listen to, it is the most exciting in many respects. For starters, this band was playing in front of rock as well as jazz audiences, and their participation in the process is clear and spurs on greater flights of improvisational fancy — give a listen to the “Mitsuku,” or “A Night in Tunisia.” In addition, there is the tightrope walk of discovery going on here. This is a band who is clearly deeply involved in trying to expand the boundaries of jazz without breaking them. The Lookout Farm material never leaves jazz’s campground, but is actually electric jazz. The duo recordings that make up Disc Two are much more cerebral, but they contain complex and intricate emotional terrain as well. Here, dialogue is everything, and Liebman and Beirach are nothing if not consummate listeners in their extended improvisations. Finally, the Quest material is the work of a fully realized group. Beirach’s interaction with Ron McClure is near symbiotic, and Hart’s drumming contains within it the kind of balance between power and subtlety that is necessary for modal inquiry. The rich tonal palette and scalar terrain explored here is unlike most of what was happening in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Liebman’s “The Hollow Men,” in its extrapolations of time and harmonic landscape, is a particularly fine example. In sum, it will mostly be collectors who shell out the cash for this set, but that’s too bad because here is an under-celebrated duo who mined their own elegant vein in jazz history and brought a different and thoroughly engaging light to shine on what they found there. — Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: David Liebman – Flute (Alto), Percussion, Sax (Soprano), Sax (Tenor); Frank Tusa – Bass (Acoustic), Bass (Electric);
These Ornette Coleman collaborators (who, like Ornette, relocated from Texas to LA) joined forces in the late ’60s. With Bobby wailing away on the trumpet and John jumping from clarinet to flute to sax, they managed to lay down distinct moods and melodies even while breaking free from conventional chord structures and taking off on intrepid improvisational adventures. Limited to 5000 copies, this set greatly expands the Carter/Bradford output by pairing their Revelation LPs Seeking (1969) and Secrets (1972) with almost two hours of unissued sessions from ’71 and ’79! Includes In the Vineyard; Song for the Unsung; The Village Dancers; Sticks and Stones; Seeking; Ballad; Circle; In a Pretty Place; And She Speaks; Pinch; Redwood; Scramble , and more. Performers: Bill Henderson – Piano; Bobby Bradford – Trumpet; Bruz Freeman – Drums; Henry Franklin – Bass; John Carter – Clarinet, Sax (Tenor), Sax (Alto), Flute; Leon “Ndugu” Chancler – Drums; Louis Spears – Bass; Nate Morgan – Piano; Tom Williamson – Bass
All programs have their good points and their bad points and the same stands true for mosaic photo software. If you have taken the time to search the net for any program that can help you to design a mosaic photograph, you might have been boggled by the sheer number of programs available. Which is the best way to determine which one of them is the best? There are some professional image processing programs available that can do just any type of task and they can also be used to create a photo mosaic.
The disadvantage is that these programs are very costly and require a steel learning curve. After all, this program is capable of doing many other things, apart from creating mosaic photographs too and therefore they tend to cost a lot. If you are into photo editing and require specialized software that can undertake editing of your images and also create the occasional mosaic, this one is the best option for you. However, if you just want to dabble with images and make the occasional mosaic photograph, it makes sense to go in for some shareware or some freeware that is capable of undertaking just mosaic image creation if you are not going to use it for any other work.
This way you shall not have to pay too much money. It is strongly recommended that you do not go in for freeware… at least for mosaic photo creation, since it requires complex tasks which are not available in most freeware programs. Once you have located and downloaded the mosaic photo software of your choice, try it out for a few days. If you have downloaded a shareware version like suggested, you might find that certain functions do not work.
You need not be worried and need not think that the software is corrupted. The complete functionality of the program will be made available after you have paid the author its price and have received the activation code. Most programs restrict image color changing and printing functions in their shareware, also referred to as crippleware. Once the software is fully functional, you can use them to create marvelous mosaic images. You just cannot imagine the fun these programs are and how easy it is to work with them.
What takes one week for an artist to do manually can be accomplished in just 2-3 hours with the help of these programs! Their main advantage lies in the fact that they can resize images on the fly and also provide you with various other options like cropping the image, flipping it, creating inverse images of it, creating mirror images of the original and lots, lots more. If a particular image is perfect for a particular segment, but the color is not matching, you can use the eye dropper tool to select the color of the original picture and recolor the small piece accordingly. It is high time you started dabbling with mosaic photo software.
