In California an old winery is perhaps 20 years old, in Spain wineries such as Muga Winery, located in La Rioja is over 10 times that old, yes for over 200 years this winery has been crafting wines at their historic center of the train station in Haro. With facilities built largely of stone and oak it is a place that looks like we’d want every winery to look.
As with most wineries from Spain the main grape grown on their hillside vineyards(about one thousand feet above sea level) in Rioja Alta is Tempranillo. They do an especially good job with the varietal because of the combination of soil and weather. The soil is a mix of old seabed, which is rare for Spain and much more common in the new world, but clay and limestone. The vineyard itself receives part of many different climate zones as it can receive weather that travels across the Atlantic, or weather from the nearby Mediterranean. The combination of these two seems to create an almost static weather front, one which seems to be almost (if not completely) ideal for growing Tempranillo.
This is a winery with few international peers as it has been called both the most recognizable Spanish winery within the United States as well as having their Torre Muga wine named one of the top 10 wines in the world in 2004 by the magazine Wine Spectator.
The Torre Muga is truly one of the great wines you are ever likely to find for sale anywhere. Aged appropriately in wooden vats, new French oak (gives a less oaky taste then the American versions) and finally at least 1 year in the bottle before release this wine lives up to the immense hype.
Tasting notes from the recent vintage have included Black-cherry colour with dark garnet hues at the edge. On the nose it reflects the perfect ripeness of its grapes and the elegance of its wood, with first fine spicy aromas coming to the fore and then jammy dark-berried fruit, as well as balsamic and mineral nuances. Profound on the palate, lively yet silky-smooth tannins, full of flavour, supple and long in the finish.
The next time you’re at a fine restaurant and would like to try the best Spain has to offer, I hope you’ll remember Muga Winery: let’s be honest it is a very memorable name!
